DACAD – How it Works

The Diver DACAD System comprises a monitor/communications/display that is integrated with the divers’ equipment and is able to monitor several divers at one time. Air supplied to each diver can be either surface supply with bail out, or single/twin SCUBA with or without bail out, or a combination of divers using either type of air supply.

System concept

  • Simultaneously remote monitors up to six divers at one time.
  • Integrates with the divers’ equipment.
  • Air supply can be:
    • surface supply with bail out, or
    • single/twin SCUBA with or without bail out, or
    • a combination of divers using either type of air supply.

Transmission

  • Via underwater modem to a receiving unit on the surface
  • Then to a monitoring computer that records, calculates and displays:
    • Depth
    • Air pressure
    • Water temperature
    • Range to diver

Software

  • Unique diver supervisor software developed by Monitoring Technologies
  • Based on published tables developed by:
    • US Navy
    • DCIEM
    • Buhlmann
  • Calculates decompression to a maximum depth of 70m (229ft)
  • Holds a database of dive/diver information
  • Provides an audit trail for diving activity
  • Has pre-load capability of dive plan into the software
  • Allows calculations “on the fly” if dive departs from plan
  • All aspects of dive recorded for analysis

Product Performance

In May 2008 pre-production tests in New Zealand indicated a transmission range of up to 2.5km (1.55 miles).

Upcoming Developments

Future developments will include diver position tracking and diver physiological monitoring. The system will allow a diver supervisor to give each diver instructions on the dive and their decompression commitment via digital voice and/or data communications.

To complement the Diver DACAD System, a wrist mounted keypad is being developed for text messaging to and from the diver.
